Renewing your BLS (Basic Life Support), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support), or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) certification is mandatory every two years to stay compliant with American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines.
In 2025, the renewal process has become faster and more efficient, with blended learning options and same-day eCard issuance. This guide covers everything you need to renew your AHA certification quickly, including online options, costs, and step-by-step instructions.
BLS Renewal: Every 2 years (expires after 24 months).
ACLS Renewal: Every 2 years (must be current on BLS).
PALS Renewal: Every 2 years (requires BLS knowledge).
⚠ Late Renewal? If your certification expires, you may need to take a full course instead of a renewal class, which is longer and more expensive.
✅ Stay Compliant – Hospitals & workplaces require valid AHA certifications.
✅ Learn Updated Guidelines – 2025 AHA updates may include new CPR techniques & algorithms.
✅ Avoid Retaking Full Course – Renewal classes are shorter & cheaper.
✅ Career Advancement – Many employers prioritize candidates with active certifications.
Yes! AHA offers blended learning options:
Online Portion (HeartCode®) – Complete theory at home.
Hands-on Session – Attend a skills check at an AHA center.
Note: Fully Online Renewal? No—AHA requires in-person skills testing for authenticity.
Your renewal costs will depend on two main factors: the expiration date of your certificate and whether you already have the current required reading materials.
For example, if you have a 2015 guidelines manual and your certificate expired in 2019, you’ll be required to use the most recent guidelines. This means you’ll receive the latest manual regardless of your older copy, and the renewal cost will be similar to that of a regular course. You’ll also be required to attend the full training session.
However, if you have the 2020 guidelines manual and your certificate expired in May 2024—and you plan to renew in June 2024—the training center may accept your existing manual. In this case, you could receive a discount on the cost of the book.
Please note that pricing and policies are determined by individual training centers (ITCs), not the American Heart Association (AHA). ITCs set their own fees, so costs can vary. You may want to check with other nearby training centers for better pricing. Pionova iQ+ can assist you in locating available ITCs in your area.
